When he was twelve, he heard Sam Cooke’s song “Cupid,” which inspired him to become a singer. He played drums in his high school marching band.

He was one of the 21 vocalists who sang “We Are the World” in 1985. Jon Bon Jovi dubbed him “The Voice.”

His father was vocalist and KNGS radio station owner Ray Perry.
